The Hornet measures temperature down the soil profile. The temperature in the top 10cm is important for plant growth. The higher the temperature the more plants grow. This has two important benefits:
Application of herbicides –
Weed growth and germination is based on temperature. Knowing the soil temperature will allow better timing of herbicide application and greater control over weeds.
Application of fertilizers –
The release of fertilisers into the soil following application is affected by soil temperature. Measuring soil temperature and then applying fertiliser at the appropriate time reduces fertiliser leaching and optimises fertiliser uptake by the turf.
